Latin Books Online - Elisha Cole's 'Nolens Volens' You Shall Make Latin Whether You Will Or No!
About this course
hi this is a veneer Marlon Denarius from latinum org dot uk' and I want to share something with you that I've been waiting to come online
for some time this is a book by Elijah Coles called Nolan's war ends and here we have it Nolan's wall ends if you click on Google and search for it you'll find the first
edition here the first example no preview up here luckily for us it's popped up online nor lens one aints or you shall make Latin whether you will or no this book was
very famous in its time let's never click on it and have a look so notice what answers make it full size make it a bit bigger and this goes to the beginning of this book because Google
has this habit of not starting things at the beginning and you have to scroll up and find the beginning so Elijah Cole's the younger we have a delightful little picture here right from a child thou
hast known ye scripture puts it by 80 Bassett and H broom 1677 if to the tongue of tongues thou hast a mind if to the best of books thou art inclined make this thy way
which pleasant is and plain affects the eye and heart instructs the brain and that's from Elijah Cole's hmm so we have a little boy with his little curve at and spook his pen and I presume that's a
penknife and here is his quill Nolan's woolens or you shall make Latin whether you will or no containing the plainest directions that have yet been given on that side
object together with the youths visible Bible being an alphabetical collection from the whole Bible of such general heads as we judged most capable of era glyphis illustrated with great variety
in four-and-twenty copper plates with the rude translation opposite that means rough by the way it's not going to be that much fun for the exercise of those that begin to make Latin third edition
therefore it is not amiss if one seeing by trial and easier and radio way than the common sort of teachers do would say what he hath proved and for the commodity allowed that others not
knowing the same might by experience proved the like London printed by jr4 T Bassett and J Browne in 1682 so a good year ago or two and let's look at the introduction this is a very useful
little book and I've half a mind to make a recording of it because it's entertaining and they aren't that many latin text books quite frankly which fall into that category to the reader
let's make this a bit larger no it doesn't go that big that's as big as we go you got one more yes to the reader I do not intend by this method of mine to exclude any other much less the use of
the royal grammar I remember this time there was a official recognised textbook in England for studying Latin for who that is sworn and licensed can dispense with his conscience in this particular
why he wasn't he's not going to offend the king and his royal printer is it but in conjunction therewith I amend my helping hand to make the way as plain as possible I
can the principle I go upon is that most rational one of CERN creases that is comparing of one language with another and I call it rational because it is most natural for we see by experience
that children will take this way whether they are influenced in it or no and those of us that speak Latin never so well do first translate our thoughts within ourselves and then pronounce them
and that in such a measure of fluent earnest as is proportionable to our practice in reason therefore and in order unto that translation mental I think we should begin with this which is
as one says a tremendous pain and inc because of course the Latin are trauma and whom is inc this little treatise may prove advantageous to the greatest schools however it was at first designed
for the benefit of such apprentices and other private persons as I saw had a mind to learn the tongue at home or at least to recollect what they had in a manner quite forgotten and my own
experience assures me that it will not fail our expectation as for the other treatise following this the usefulness thereof cannot be questioned by anyone that knows with what success the
Proverbs and other things have for several impressions been already entertained this is some other book that he wrote and what preparations of the same kind are still endeavouring by able
and experienced masters the method in this is the same as in the rest saving that verbs are sometimes put in the infinitive mood to distinguish the conjugation and save the labor of
searching the dictionary the nouns are put in the nominative case except now and then where the phrases would have made the translation over difficult the matter is
such as is most agreeable to Christian schools and being adorned with such variety of Pleasant emblems it must needs be so much the more delightful to the younger sort for the main design of
it is according to Horace's didactics to present you both with profit and pleasure in a dish but the cheapest thing it pretends to above the rest is the having so plain and profitable and
introduction prefixed whereas they still propose mister waze's grammar or some such thing to go before yeah you do not only enter yourself but also find directions for the perfecting of you in
making and by consequence in speaking Latin note dampers on speaking because at this time if you went to school in England you had to speak Latin there wasn't enough to actually be able to
read it these observations will also assist you much in giving of opposite English to your Latin which is a thing of greater moment than many apprehend and therefore
I intend a more particular discourse upon that subject if God grant life and opportunity your friend and servant Elijah coals so Nolan's wall ends or you shall make Latin etc with you will oh no
and that's the introduction as you can see this is going to be a entertaining book even though it's a grammar book um but it's pretty straightforward and explains things very very clearly
and I think it's a wonderful book so you can find this on books.google.com and have a good read of it I think you might find it interesting miss me it's a bit smaller
and ease of going through here telling what verbs are participants and numbers and nouns verbs singular plural alright um oh a mass armed at Tokyo docket docket LEGO League easily get audio out
ease out it and thorough Imams arm artists among kings tokidoki League emus legatus Lagoon what's interesting is he puts the acute accent here on the stress something that
even modern books frequently don't do the ones that don't provide macrons often they don't even provide the stress of I do provide microns of them provide the stress and students get this wrong
and of course stress in Latin although it's not the main principle this quite important so there we have it I swim thou swim he swims what swims who swim fishes swim Cork swims well it does I
suppose it floats we were say nowadays and so on I wash thy worst he washes who washes water washers laundresses wash who wash we wash ye wash they wash and so on the English is quite interesting
so if you learn this book you end up speaking like a 17th century gentleman and so on and yeah it's it's a very solid book heavy on the grammar so I am a man thou art a mouse he is a B who is
a be a scholar is a B birds of flowers wisdom is honey a truant is a drone is a ship all right the breast is the prow the belly is the keel the wings are sails the tail is a rudder so now you've
got these little funny little things going on here I am a made a man he is become a B thou art become a mouse he becomes a youth who becomes a youth a boy becomes a youth a youth becomes a
man a man becomes an old man old men become boys so yeah this is the kind of thing we find in this book I am called a man thou art called a mouse and so on these are
things that I find quite amusing you wouldn't find them in a whose eloquence the eloquence of whom Cicero's eloquence the eloquence of Cicero and so on explaining what's going on etc etc I'm
just running through all right the Hat is for a covering fitted to the head right and then there's got the thing here in that in the middle I'm gonna go through it a band is for covering fitted
to thee neck all right and I suppose if you were a teacher you could play this game where you have to connect one to the other you could mix them all up and you know the student
would have to match the thing to the thing you know like by drawing lines between them if you mix them all up and that kind of stuff so rest follows labor reward follows work
harvest for the seed time and so on the verbs and oops someone's had a bit of fun there so that's our book it requires I think its merits
inspection you might need to find a copy that hasn't been eaten up by a man who was a mouse so this is Elijah Cole's ye shall make lassen just shut your eyes a bit I'm gonna scroll up very quickly
yeah yeah you shall make Latin whether you will or no no lens what ants published in this edition 1682 by Elijah Cole right that's that I hope you enjoyed that and if you have some time I
encourage you to go and have a look at this little gem of a Latin textbook just for the sheer pleasure even though you may never use it after you look at it once bye
THERE IS ALWAYS MORE
