「Learn Japanese」 The て-Form as “and” (CLAUSE1 + て + CLAUSE 2 as “CLAUSE1 and CLAUSE2”)

「Learn Japanese」 CLAUSE1 + て + CLAUSE 2 as “CLAUSE1 and CLAUSE2”

While the Japanese language does not have a grammatical construct that directly corresponds to the English language’s conjunction “and,” the て-Form is the most appropriate association. For instance, connecting adjectives with adjectives, connecting nouns with nouns, connecting verbs and verbs, and inter-connecting adjectives with nouns with verbs all require the て-Form of these words. This construction can connect more than two clauses and can imply among them a number of relationships, such as temporal succession and cause-and-effect.

Example(s):
彼は頼もしくて親切です。
Kare wa tanomoshikute shinsetsu desu.
(He is reliable and nice.)

明日ダウンタウンに行って友達と一緒にアイスを食べます。
Ashita downtown ni itte tomodachi to issho ni ice o tabemasu.
(Tomorrow I will go downtown and eat ice cream with friends.)
*Note the implication that the eating of ice cream will occur downtown.

コンピューターが壊れて私は宿題が出せなかった。
Computer ga kowarete watashi wa shukudai ga dasenakatta.
(My computer broke and I could not turn in my homework.)
*Note the implication of the cause-and-effect relationship.
