"Designing the Internet of Things" - Carl Bass
About this course
the three ways that I see the internet-of-things influencing how we design products and he comes in the form of how they get designed how they get
used and how they get maintained so let me start with one one story about how they get used and this is a story about me and my shop and so he's in my shop one day and I was running my lathe and
it was screeching it was making a horrible noise and it was cutting terrible parts and for those who don't cut metal that that screeching is the vibration and it leaves a surface finish
that's truly awful and so I went over and I started to think about this and I started to turn the knob that to turn the knobs and dials on it because you changed the feeds and the speeds and you
hope it stops vibrating and then the surface finish gets better and then I realized to myself I'm just turning knobs and dials like I'm exploring this multivariate space and I have very few
landmarks or keys and I'm just trying to listen to this thing and I feel like I'm the least qualified person in the room to be doing this thing but I'm just turning knobs and dials and hoping it
gets better so I said to myself why did I do something different so I took out my cell phone and I took my cell phone and I taped it into the lathe I just put it in a ziploc bag and put it in the
lathe to protect it from the coolant and I started running the lathe and it started screeching again and then I used some signal processing software and started to figure out all the noises it
was making then when I tuned it I can actually watch what was going on a little bit better that's not bad but then I remembered that go-kart and the go-kart has these really cheap chips and
sensors in it that you know measure things like forces it has data logging on it it has wireless communication all the chip that costs you know tens of dollars so I went and I went over to the
go-kart dragged out the chip I put that in the ziploc bag and then I started measuring measuring it again and all of a sudden I could really start understanding what was going on and the
question went from how should I turn the knobs and dials instead it went to why am i doing this at all and I think this is one of the big important points in the internet of
things which is the most important thing that's going to make Internet of Things stuff really useful is the ability to close the loop
