Fastest Way To Get Faster: The Main Foot Killer – Drum Lesson
(rock music) (stick clicks) (drumming) – Hey everyone, it’s Jared here in the seventh lesson
of my Fastest Way To Get Faster series, Now this one’s called The Main Foot Killer. So whether you
play your bass drum with your right leg or your left leg, it’s gonna be in for a serious workload
as we get into these exercises. So the first exercise is all just played in 16th notes and it’s written in 4/4. Now I go right right,
left, bass, bass, and then I go left, right, bass, bass and that pattern just repeats itself again
to make one bar of 4/4. Let me play it for you slow and fast. (metronome beeps) (sticks click)
(slow drumming) (metronome beeps) (sticks click) (fast drumming) The next exercise
is played in 5/4 and so we do a group of three with the hands, right, left, right, then two bass drums,
then we do left, right, left, and then two bass drums. This pattern repeats itself one more time to make a bar of 5/4
played as 16th notes. So just really practice this pattern nice and slow and get comfortable with the way that it’s orchestrated over 5/4.
(metronome beeps) (sticks click) (slow drumming) (metronome beeps) (sticks click)
(fast drumming) Now the final exercise is notated in 6/4. Now we’re playing four on the hands
and then two on the bass drum. That makes one group of six. We play this four times to complete the entire bar of 6/4 as 16th notes.
That sounds like a lot of different numbers and notes or whatever, but just play it one two three four bass bass
four times as 16th notes and then you’re gonna be playing 6/4. So let me play it for you nice and slow and then fast.
(metronome beeps) (sticks click) (slow drumming) (metronome beeps) (sticks click)
(fast drumming) Now on their own, the exercises are cool, but played in sequence I think that’s even cooler
and it really gives that main foot a workout. And you’re getting a byproduct of really working on those hands.
So what I like to do is alternate the hands on the snare drum, so the right left bass bass, left right bass bass, and then
also on the next exercise, right left right bass bass, left right left bass bass, and then on the 6/4 exercise we do groups of four on the
hands, right left right left, bass bass, and then I go left right left right, bass bass. So let’s play it in sequence at both slow and fast speeds.
Here we go. (metronome beeps) (sticks click) (slow drumming) (metronome beeps)
(sticks click) (fast drumming) So that’s it. Get to your kit and start practicing this stuff.
I guarantee it’ll have huge improvements in your drumming if you’re just willing to put in the time. I’ll see you in the next lesson.

Your bass drum foot is in for a real workout in lesson seven of my “Fastest Way To Get Faster” series!
The first exercise starts with groups of 4 and the pattern is played in 4/4 timing. Next, the pattern is played in 5/4 using 16th note groups of 5, and finally we have groups of 7 played as 16th notes in 6/4. I’d recommend using a quarter note click and don’t worry too much about the odd time signature.
Play each exercise individually for 5 minutes, then play them in sequence for 15 minutes.
