so here at Columbia I began as a faculty member in the early 1990s looking at the aural manifestation of HIV disease with infectious drug using populations we now
call them injecting drug using but in the early area they were IV d u and we were able to study the disease as it showed itself in people of color and in women and from that era there was a
center called the center for HIV studies that we worked with in that era interesting enough one of my collaborators ANCA Earhart was a part of that study and ran that Center and now
remains one of the senior advisors for this work across the university centrally in the Provost's office we're able to put aside resources to help make sure that this area of scholarship is
premier in in the Academy we are able to bring in faculty whose area of expertise lies in LGBTQ scholarship and this award has been quite effective in bringing together these wonderful scholars for
not just the work that they do here for Columbia and for our for our students but also now we're seeing National Forum coming together queer disruptions in particular has been a forum that has
brought together over 200 scholars in this area of study on three different occasions so we're very very proud of that work
Dr. Dennis Mitchell began his career in the 1990s looking at the oral manifestations of #HIV. As Vice Provost for Faculty Advancement, Mitchell has worked to highlight LGBTQ scholars and build communities of study.
