Covering Climate Now: Margaret Sullivan, The Washington Post
A lot of people think
that climate change is kind of a boring story, and
it's been described as a ratings killer, something
that is a downer,
people don't want to hear about. We, as journalists, need to
find ways to make it compelling, engaging, and interesting
and bring it home to people so that they understand
and want to act about it. So that's our responsibility.
It's not really our job to
say, oh, that's kind of boring, so we're not going to do it. It's our jobs to say,
how can we make it into the compelling
story that it clearly is?
News media can no longer be complacent when it comes to climate change. Over 150 media outlets have joined Columbia Journalism Review and The Nation to commit for one week from 9/16 – 9/23 to report on how our actions have been devastating to our planet. Margaret Sullivan, a columnist at The Washington Post, shares her perspective. See CJR’s full series here: https://www.cjr.org/covering_climate_now/
