「Learn Japanese」 (NOUN/VERB) + 通り(に) as “in accordance with (NOUN/VERB)”

The word 通り (とおり), which translates to “in accordance with, following, just as, the way, exactly like, etc.,” can follow directly after a NOUN or a VERB word to express that the following statement is in accordance with the NOUN or VERB used. In the case of NOUN words, the particle の appears after the NOUN and before 通り (とおり). Additionally for NOUN words, 通り can be used as a direct suffix, in which case it still simply follows right after the NOUN word but has its pronunciation changed to どおり instead of とおり due to rendaku, or sequential voicing. In this grammar construction, the usage of the particle に is optional.

Example(s):

計画通り。
Keikaku doori.
(Just as planned.)

ジョージワシントンが言う通りだ。
George Washington ga iu toori da.
(It’s just as George Washington says.)

先生が教えて下さった通りに問題を解いたら手間が省けます。
Sensei ga oshiete kudasatta toori ni mondai o toitara tema ga habukemasu.
(If you solve the problem the way our teacher showed us, you can save some time.)

ビデオの説明の通りにした方がいいと思います。
Video no setsumei no toori ni shita hou ga ii to omoimasu.
