Today’s singing analogy compares the process of learning to sing to the difference between an automobile’s manual transmission and an automatic transmission. Also explained is the nature of “gear changes” that must be made in the voice as we travel through our full vocal range.

As students of singing and vocal training, we have to first make these difficult gear changes part of our conscious awareness, much like the manual transmission of a car. We consciously change gears.

After adequate, dedicated vocal training these processes eventually become automatic. This is a fundamental part of learning how to sing better.
