Is a Deep Inhale Needed for Contemporary Singing? | Voice Building Junkies Ep017

There’s controversy brewing in the singing community! I’m never one to avoid stirring up trouble.
Many voice coaches of contemporary styles of singing claim that a deep inhale isn’t necessary for good breathing technique when singing contemporary styles of music (i.e. pop, rock, country, musical theater, etc).
There is rarely a good argument made. They argue that the phrases are shorter so you don’t need as much air, or that the style is less demanding so you don’t need so much air.
In this video I argue that a large inhale is essential for good breathing technique for singing for a few reasons. First, there are long phrases in contemporary music. Second, there are also strong high notes in contemporary music.
We have to train for our hardest phrases so it’s essential how to learn how to take a nice deep breath and then to properly manage the release of that air while singing.
