Is Breathing Technique Important for Beginning Singers? | Voice Building Junkies Ep018

Is it important for beginning singers to learn a proper breathing for singing technique early in their training? To me, the answer is obvious, and it’s “yes”. Nearly all vocal problems have their origin in bad breathing technique.

Yet, there are not only voice coaches, but entire pop teaching methods, that teach beginning singers to ignore breathing technique, that it’s not important, that it’s “too technical”.

They encourage beginning singers to just “breathe naturally” or “breathe as you speak”. I think they are doing their students a disservice, and I know this from personal experience, having been unfortunate to have studied under such a method when I was younger.

A good, costal-diaphragmatic breathing technique is both easy and fun to learn. It is the basis for the Italian appoggio technique for singing. You don’t have to learn Italian words to learn how to breathe correctly for singing. You also don’t have to sing classical music styles.

All good, beautiful singing, especially songs that require strong high notes, require proper breathing technique. Learn it as early as possible from a good teacher.
