SINGING TIPS | Keep Your Mind on the Vowel | VOCAL NEBULA

“Keep your mind on the vowel” is something you’ll hear me say often. Our vocal folds can only make vowels. Often, the difference between comfortable, beautiful sounding singing and uncomfortable, stressed singing is due to the way we shape the vowels we sing.
We cannot simply sing the same vowels and consonants that we speak. This can work in our lower range, but not as we enter our middle range and beyond into singing high notes.
Not only must we keep the sound of the vowel we want to make clear in our head as we vocalize, but the vowel will change depending on where we our in our range (i.e. what pitch we are singing).
Further, when we do singing exercises such as closed mouth singing (eg. humming), we often focus on the “mmmmm” part of the sound which is a mistake. We use the “mmmmm” or “nnnnn” only to launch the vowel, and then we stay focused on the vowel.
Give it a try. Let me know what you find.
